BSM was founded in 2011 in Turkey with the purpose of providing a venue for workshops, research and education, addressing independent filmmakers with a view to enable them to realize their creative energies and engage in collective cinema and video projects.

One of the main aims of BMS is to break the existing monopolies on film-making and to challenge the structures of power which turn cinema into an instrument in the service of the those who possess the capital to produce movies. To that end, BMS helps to introduce novel tools and technologies in film-making and foster conversations on current developments in film theory and language.

Included in the projects undertaken by BMS are: publishing a periodic journal entitled “B2″ (The Independent Square); organizing workshops and seminars on a variety of topics; providing assistance to those who are in the process of making feature films by providing technical equipment; and to create alternative possibilities for the distribution and projection of independent films.

*By embracing the “Independent Cinema” concept, BSM underscores the importance of struggling against the challenges posed by the demands of capital, reactionary inclinations, religious associations and their affiliations, structural impositions of imperialism and any kinds of dogmatism—including, among others, commodification through marketing mechanisms—and any form of censorship that aims to delimit independent production. BSM is an organization committed to humanity’s struggle for equality.
